Summer Time TBWF Update 2023

The summer is time for vacations, family trips, and splashing in the pool, and the TBWF family has spent time doing all three.  We also continued food deliveries to ward 8, where many children no longer have access to regular school meals.

We continued delivering food to Eagle Academy students attending summer school, and have expanded our deliveries to Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative (FSFSC), where we are often met by a line of neighbors awaiting the arrival of our little blue van. Families from Savoy ES are using the FSFSC Congress Heights Community Center as a location to pick up food while the school is out of session for the summer.

Families received an enormous bounties of amazing fruit and veggies from Freshfarm Dupont Circle Farmer's market, including peaches, cherries, corn corn and more corn, eggplant, nectarines, rainbow chard and zucchini.

Wegmans continues to supply us with pounds and pounds of meat including pork shoulders, steaks, chicken, and even duck! Thanks to Food Rescue DC, we are rescuing food from our local Wegmans twice weekly, and are so happy we can deliver this amazing food that would otherwise go to waste.

Thank you! Fighting childhood hunger in Washington DC is a community effort.

January - March 2023 TBWF Highlights

It’s been a busy 3 months for TBWF!  We submitted some grants, had one more knee surgery for Alicia (so fun!), and continue delivering essential grocery support to 225+ students and their families every week.

Once the dust settled after #GivingTuesday 2022, we had raised $28,362!!!!!! THANK YOU TO ALL OF YOU WHO MADE THIS POSSIBLE!!!! YOU ARE AMAZING!!!! We continue to be stunned and humbled by the generous support of this community.  You all make this important work possible!

Your support is keeping the TBWF van full of gas and helping us build essential infrastructure for our small but mighty organization.

Spring has arrived and the food rescue collections from the Dupont Circle Farmer’s market are booming!  This means we can get the best, local, organic, fresh vegetables and fruit to families that do not have easy or safe access to this kind of amazing food!
This month we also welcomed our newest volunteer retiree, Alicia’s Mom! There is no retiring from feeding people, so we have put her to work! If you are interested in helping with pick-ups, delivery, accounting, or social media -- just let us know!!! You can email us or keep a look out for a virtual sign-up sheet that will be available soon!
March marked the 2nd anniversary of the death of a Mother of two students at one of the schools we serve in Ward 8. After we dropped off food and supplies for her family, we pulled out of an alley that 10 minutes later was the scene of a drive-by shooting. Your donations not only help provide food, but allow families to get this food safely in a neighborhood that is overwhelmed with violence. Well fed people make better decisions; people need food as they recover from trauma; and children need food to be ready to learn. Thank you all so much for helping us do this work.

October 2022 TBWF Highlights

“The families were so happy with all the amazing food. The food went so fast!! I had one young lady give me a big hug and tell me thanks so much for having food so she could feed her kids... It brought tears to my eyes.” –Tynisha Wright, FSFSC Congress Heights Family Success Center

When you support TBWF, you join us in making change for the better!!!!! Fighting childhood hunger in Washington DC is a community effort.  We are grateful for the support of each and every one of you!

Your support now helps provide groceries for 225 students and their families every week!!! THANK YOU!

To Be Well Fed is extremely excited to announce that we have added Center City Public Charter School in Petworth and the Far Southeast Family Strengthening Collaborative(FSFSC) Congress Heights Family Success Center to our weekly grocery support program.

This means that TBWF is now delivering weekly grocery support to 225 families, 5 days a week!!!! We can do this because 1) Alicia’s knee is on the mend (WOOHOO!!!) and, more importantly, because 2) we trust in YOU, our supporters to make this important work possible.
#GivingTuesday is November 29th and we need your support!  Our goal is to raise $30,000 to ensure we can continue weekly grocery support in 2023 to 225 families at the following institutions: Eagle Academy,  Friendship SE AcademySavoy ElementaryCenter City PCS Petworth, and FSFSC Congress Height’s Family Success Center.

Please help us reach our $30,000 goal here!  Tell your neighbors, friends and family!  Every amount helps! THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks to  PlusOne  and Food Rescue US DC, we continue to rescue food from Moms Organic MarketFreshFarm Farmer’s Market at Dupont Circle, and Wegmans – these rescues provide us with gorgeous, organic produce, dairy products, meats, vegetarian/vegan proteins, bread, and prepared meals! The communities we partner with do not have easy access to healthy, nutritious food, so we are grateful to pick up, sort, and distribute this bounty to the students and families we serve.

To learn more about food rescue and to hear from TBWF’s own Dave and Luther Kiyvyra, listen to this recent podcast.
TBWF was honored to attend the annual fundraiser for  Food Rescue US DC at Gallery O on H.  Not only did we get to dance and eat cake pops and sliders, but we had a chance to talk about TBWF and the importance of food rescue when it comes to fighting childhood hunger in the DC area.  Together we truly can do epic things!

August/September 2022 TBWF Highlights

Thank you for supporting To Be Well Fed!  Your support helps provide groceries for 150 students and their families every week.

To Be Well Fed is excited to announce a new food rescue partnership with the Wegmans in our neighborhood!  We collect food contributions from them twice a week thanks to Food Rescue DC!

Thanks to  PlusOne  and Food Rescue, we continue to collect food contributions from Moms Organic Market and the Sunday FreshFarm Farmer’s Market at Dupont Circle – these rescues provide us with BEAUTIFUL, organic produce, dairy products, meats, and vegetarian/vegan proteins! The communities we serve do not have easy access to this kind of healthy, nutritious food so we are grateful to do the work to pick up, sort, and distribute this bounty to the scholars and families at Eagle Academy, at Friendship SE Academy, and Savoy Elementary in Ward 8.
Our children were featured in a blog post on the No Child Goes Hungry website – check it out here!  Our 13 year-old had some great quotes – and has been invited to participate in a podcast about food rescue and food insecurity in Washington DC in October!  Stay tuned for a link to the podcast on social media and in the next TBWF Newsletter.
We had a successful t-shirt fundraiser!  THANK YOU to all who participated!!!!! We raised $993 total!  We can’t wait to see folks sporting their TBWF pride!  Green looks good on everyone!!!

We had a table at the annual Chevy Chase DC Day put on by the Chevy Chase Citizens Association.  It was a lovely day and gave us a chance to talk with folks about food insecurity in Washington DC.  We handed out flyers about TBWF and about what they can do about food insecurity in their neighborhoods.

June/July 2022 Highlights

Thank you for supporting To Be Well Fed!  Your donation helps provide groceries for 150 students and their families every week.

Summer months tend to be slightly less hectic for TBWF, but things didn’t slow down this year.  Some long-awaited goals were accomplished (HOORAY!!!), allowing us to make big plans for the future!

In June and July, TBWF rescued and distributed $9,700 (2425 lbs.) worth of food with the help of PlusOne and Food Rescue DC!
Our shiny new fridge and freezer pair were finally delivered and set up at Friendship SE Academy!  We immediately filled them with fresh, healthy groceries!!  Students and their families now have daily access to a fully stocked pantry – including fresh produce and meat!
We started doing food rescue at the Sunday FreshFarm Market at Dupont Circle!  This rescue provides tons of beautiful, local, organic produce, breads, and meats – all of which we bag up and deliver to Eagle Academy on Monday mornings -- that's happiness in a paper bag!
After waiting 5 months, our gigantic fridge and freezer were finally delivered to our Epic Service Room at River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation ! Our rescue pup, Mochi supervised their delivery because Alicia is stuck at home recovering from her long overdue knee surgery.  These appliances are a game changer for increasing our capacity for rescuing and distributing fresh food!!!!

Last weekend, our amazing partner Rev. Kären Rasmussen of No Child Goes Hungry and Rev. Nancy McDonald Ladd gave a wonderful presentation about TBWF at River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation ! Check it out here if you’d like to learn more about why and how TBWF got started! The TBWF presentation starts at 30:30.

April/May 2022 TBWF Highlights

YOU supported 150 students and their families every week.  THANK YOU!

Eagle Academy and Savoy Elementary are weekly commitments – and we kept the pantry at Friendship SE Academy fully stocked.

We’ve added 2 more Murch ES families to our grocery delivery program.

In April and May, TBWF rescued and distributed $27,967 (8,240 lbs.) worth of food with the help of PlusOne and Food Rescue DC!

In early April, we packed up and delivered 150 Spring Break Bags with the help of NCGH and RRUUC.

We rescued a huge pallet of beautiful, organic cherry tomatoes from Whole Foods!
We are setting up a TBWF composting plan – sometimes the rescued produce is squished or ruined….and now instead of throwing spoiled produce in the trash, we will complete its life cycle in a compost bin!

Each week, our younger kids enjoy re-stocking the Little Free Pantries outside of RRUUC with refreshing drinks.

With help from NCGH, we purchased some much needed uniforms for students at Friendship Southeast Academy

We are starting to utilize more volunteer power in the DC area!!!  Alicia had a run-in with a moonbounce in the rain and busted her knee, so she had to ask for help…. And thanks to RRUUC, we are currently building an experienced team of volunteers who can keep the wheels on this crazy food circus no matter what!  Please email us if you are interested in volunteering with TBWF!

Finally, we are running low on the re-usable bags we use to pick up food donations.  If you have any you would like to donate, please let us know!

We are beyond grateful for our continuing partnership with No Child Goes Hungry – together we are doing all the epic things!

March 2022 TBWF Highlights

Your donation helps to provide weekly groceries to 150+ students and their families every single week!  Thank you!

In March, we rescued and distributed $17,510 (6,640 lbs.) worth of food with the help of PlusOne and Food Rescue DC!  In the past, TBWF’s primary “food getting” technique was to purchase it. We continue to purchase food, especially non-perishables that are essential for our pantry programs.  Now we also collect and “rescue” food from local stores such as Mom’s Organic Market, Target, Trader Joes, and the Ballston Farmer’s Market to distribute to the schools we serve.  “Food getting” is a lot of work!  It requires researching what food will be available and when, arranging for pick up, sorting, organizing, storing and eventually delivering the goods to their destinations. One of our biggest challenges is access to refrigeration --to keep this fresh, gorgeous, nutritious, mostly organic, and incredibly diverse food, just that-- beautiful and fresh.

Speaking of REFRIGERATION – a generous donor has provided the funding to purchase large industrial freezers and refrigerators for our room at River Road Unitarian Universalist Congregation (RRUUC) and next to our pantry at Friendship SE Academy! So, we are on our way to building the cold storage infrastructure needed to deliver more fresh, healthy food to the students and families we serve.  Unfortunately, supply chain issues have delayed the arrival of these appliances…Hopefully we will have them soon!

Our room at RRUUC is a game changer, giving us a holding and processing space for food so we can take advantage of food rescue opportunities.  It is a dynamic space, filled to capacity with food one day, and then empty the next.

We are beyond grateful for our continuing partnership with No Child Goes Hungry – together we can do epic things!

Fighting childhood hunger in Washington DC is a community effort. We are so grateful for your support!
