all children deserve
to be well fed

Learn more about how and why To Be Well Fed got started, and what we are doing today!

To Be Well Fed is a nonprofit dedicated to fighting childhood hunger in Washington D.C. We partner with public schools to provide groceries for more than 225 children and families in need.

Our mission is to help every child in Washington D.C. arrive at school (in-person or virtual) well nourished and ready to learn!

the need

Three out of four children in Washington D.C. public schools are economically disadvantaged. Many of these students rely on school meals for sustenance during the week, lack access to healthy foods during weekends, and live in food insecure households in ‘food deserts.’

We partner with public schools in ward 8, where:

~14%

of kids are homeless

~47%

of kids live below the poverty line

~70%

of kids are at risk*

*At risk is defined as a student who possesses one of the following characteristics at any point during the given school year: Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) enrollment, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) enrollment, identification as homeless by the student’s school or other community partners, under the care of the Child and Family Services Agency (CFSA, also known as foster care), and/or overage (high school only). A high school student is overage if he or she is at least one year older than the expected age for his/her grade.
